While channel surfing last night, I wound up on the ill received Suicide Squad. The movie was about a quarter in so I left it on for about 10 minutes; I experienced a scene where Will Smith was being very Will Smith-y. Not wanting to watch the full movie from here (and the fact the my girlfriend entered the room to watch something else), I turned it off and thought, I’ll watch this from the beginning another day.

That “another day” wound up being the next morning. For some reason I really wanted to watch the film. I’ll be straight. I really wasn’t offended by Suicide Squad. It was totally a dumb, popcorn “action-flick”. Margot Robbie was probably the best part; Her Harley Quinn was actually pretty funny and interesting. The rest of the cast were pretty forgettable, especially the villains.

One thijokerleto-920x584ng I didn’t get was, The Joker. Jared Leto’s Joker was straight up, weird. I guess it was done on purpose, but I didn’t quite get it. He looked like a rapper; grills, gold jewelry, face tattoos; I think he even had a pimp cane in one scene. There just wasn’t enough of him in the actual film for me to care that much. I guess this is a usual issue with the ensemble cast. Someone’s character gets left in the dust. I am interested to see where they go with this character. I hope it’s more than just some more screen time in Suicide Squad 2 (This film made a shit-ton).

Maybe we’ve been spoiled with comic-book movies such as; Logan, the Nolan Batman series, or hell, really any of the recent Marvel movies. I’m not saying that Suicide Squad doesn’t live up to those films (it doesn’t), but I don’t think it was trying to be anything but fun, summer action. It was fun and dumb. I may even watch it again if I run into it while channel surfing.
